I would recommend a standard water heater with the addition of a small recirculation unit called The Hot Water Lobster! I’ve had a recirculation system in my home for 8 years. It’s saved me a lot of time and money. For the first 6 years I went through 2 pumps though. They were costly, noisy, and did not last nearly as long as I hoped. I did some research and found a system called The Hot Water Lobster that is pump free, creating no noise. It’s only $179.95, has a 10-year warranty, and is very easy to install. It took me 15 minutes.

This unit conserves water and allows for instant hot water to all my taps! I have had it for 2 years now and am very impressed. I recommend this over any other system!

Tankless water heater are a great source of fast heat. Not every jurisdiction allows them, so check your city ordinances to make sure it’s ok. In my experience they’ve been much more reliable than a usual tank water heater and over time the tankless variety will save you money.

Before running out to buy a new hot water heater, optimize the performance of what you have. My oil hot water was just terrible but I was able to almost cut costs in half by turning down the temperature, insulating with blanket, having the unit serviced, and installing a temper tank (an old hot water heater destined for the dump) along with a heat recovery system to help preheat my water. None of this was very complicated or expensive. See the details of what I did at http://www.savehouseholdenergy.com/save-hot-water.html
